I'm originally from Aberdeen but moved to Edinburgh to attend university here. I graduated in English Literature and History before doing a Master's Degree in Journalism.
Since then, I've been working freelance and trying to put together my first novel. On top of that, I've had a job at Kidzcare, helping out at numerous afterschool clubs around Edinburgh, as well as extensive experience in tutoring.
I have previously tutored in English, History and Modern Studies, taking multiple children from failing prelims to passing their final exams. I have some formal teacher training through doing a TEFL course and have also worked at afterschool clubs, giving me experience in dealing with kids from primary school age right through secondary.
Many people view English and History as a chore rather than as something that can be loved. I like to try and change that. Passing exams is always going to be the most important thing, but if I can get a tutee to enjoy the subject, then that makes that task a lot easier. These subjects are too often made dry and formal, which rarely appeals to the teenagers and kids that are being asked to study them. If you can make them exciting, then the revision and good results should follow.
