Over twenty years experience tutoring in Lewes, Brighton & London. Lessons are bespoke and tailored to suit the needs of every individual and students regularly exceed expectations; many rising by several grade boundaries. A fun and engaging St Andrews Masters graduate with teaching qualification from LSE.
I have taught my subjects across all ages & abilities, enjoying the demands of adapting lessons for every individual need. I am particularly proud to have assisted pupils with learning difficulties achieve higher grades, but am equally comfortable working with pupils of any and all abilities.
I work hard to make a subject enjoyable as well as academically rewarding and this is reflected in a success rate that has ensured all pupils have passed their exams (many exceeding expectations).
A professional stage and screen actor, I also have a keen interest in sports, reading, carpentry, walking and growing my own vegetables. I was raised in Cumbria and Argentina, via Hong Kong, Italy, Derby and London; ultimately settling in Lewes.
To avoid any confusion on the reviews below, I was christened John Robert but am known as Rob (the website will only use given first names on profiles)

My 'approach' to tutoring will always be to consider my pupil's approach to learning. Ascertaining what is required; how to make a subject 'click' and meeting the varying requirements of every student is crucial. Generally, this is why parents and pupils tend to be looking for tuition beyond the school system. I always have an initial meeting to look at how best we might proceed and this is constantly under review as we work together.
In terms of academic structure, in most cases my approach would be to follow a curriculum but with the flexibility to pause where there are gaps and build confidence in preparation for any exams or schoolwork.
I tend to use past papers when it comes to exam based tuition as this is ultimately what students will be faced with come exam time. However, if I have a pupil for longer, there is scope for harnessing a broader subject interest or often simply assisting with difficult homework ensuring it is being learnt from.
Lastly, lessons are always engaging and fun. I strive to keep a healthy balance in this. Often I meet pupils who have lost confidence with a subject and now dislike it; bringing them back on board is essential. Whilst the emphasis is always on academic progress, there's a light-hearted humour in all that we do.
