Mary

With over 35 years teaching experience, I enjoy working with people at all levels of maths from A level and BTEC through to Engineering Maths and some Year 1 engineering modules. At the moment I teach students who travel to me and/ or teach students from further away via zoom. Following a 1st Class hons degree in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College I gained a PGCE in maths education. I spent some years teaching in schools but spent thirty years in Durham University teaching maths to adults (A Level topics) and supporting students in year 1 and 2 in engineering, pharmacy and business maths). I currently provide tutor support to a number of local university engineering students achieving significant success. I have also supported a number of A Level students who have made great progress both in their study and confidence. As well as tutoring maths at a variety of levels, I am happy to tutor the following Year 1 Engineering topics: mass and energy balances, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, mechanical calculations, control, electricity but not electronics or computer based packages.

Tutoring Experience

I have over 35 years of teaching experience, originally in schools but mostly teaching maths, science and engineering to adults on a university foundation programme and providing support to students in year 1 and 2 . I have extensive knowledge of the types of maths needed for engineering, pharmacy, primary teaching and business courses and am used to teaching students who may have had very poor previous experience of maths. I also have experience as an online support tutor for various engineering modules.

Tutoring Approach

I particularly enjoy working with those who have had previous negative experiences of maths or lack confidence. I like to go back as far as I can to rebuild but believe that confidence is often more important than the maths itself. My doctorate thesis and published book chapter particularly focused on the interaction of new and old knowledge and impact of confidence on learning.
