I am an Economics graduate from Lancaster University with over 30 years' teaching experience at a leading national grammar school in Cheltenham, an outstanding secondary school in Gloucestershire and an independent tutorial college in London. I also have a current and up to date DBS. I live in the Midlands, married with two children and I am passionate about helping young students achieve their potential. I am a keen sportsman who still plays competitive football, and tennis / badminton for leisure.
I have been teaching for over 30 years specialising in A Level Economics and A Level Business Studies. During this time I have experience as a Head of Department, Head of Faculty and Head of Sixth Form (Assistant Headteacher). I have consistently achieved outstanding results (students gaining excellent value added) with the majority of my students deciding to study the subject further at one of the top universities.
Most recently, my A Level students achieved a pass rate of, 79% A*-B and 100% A*-C.
I am also an experienced A Level and GCSE Examiner and Reviewer for Marking and Moderation, so I am familiar with all the major exam boards, such as, AQA, Edexcel, Edexcel International, WJEC, OCR and Eduqas. My students consistently add significant value to their exam results, often improving by at least two grades, since I focus on the exam technique, especially the higher order thinking skills such as analysis and evaluation, which are essential in order to achieve the top grades.
I will always, at the start, discuss with my tutee what they want to focus on. This may be specific parts of the syllabus, reviewing topics previously studied and or current topics being investigated, however, most tutee's need to improve on their exam technique and how to convert their knowledge into a top grade. My teaching method therefore involves using past papers, real life examples and focussing on the mark scheme. As an experienced A level and GCSE examiner I concentrate on the exam specification and exam technique, ensuring that the student is well prepared for their exams and able to structure their essays and apply their answer to information from a case study. My aim is to inspire and provide the best possible service for the student using a range of teaching and learning techniques to suit the individual. During and after the tutoring a range of information sheets are given to the student as part of the package as well as marking and giving constructive feedback on past exam questions before the next tutorial session in order to ensure that the student receives the maximum benefit from my tutoring.
Below are two recent testimonials from parents whose children I tutored this year.
"My son Ben was 2 marks from a U grade in his November mock exam and was seriously thinking about dropping the subject. We got Huw to tutor him and immediately he began to enjoy the subject. Huw was able to explain difficult theories in a way in which Ben could understand and with his expert guidance in preparation for his summer exams, Ben gained an A grade and is now studying Economics at University in Manchester. We strongly recommend Huw"
David, from Worcester.
"Huw tutored my son on the run up to his A’Levels earlier this year and I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for tutoring support.
Huw is passionate about the subjects he teaches, has a wealth of knowledge on current teaching criteria, a range of resources, and adapts his lessons to suit the need of the student.
His approach is calm, professional and engaging and he instils a feeling of positivity and capability in the students he supports.
Thanks to Huw, my son passed his A’Level Economics with an “A” and we would recommend him 100%. "
