I hold a BA in English literature with First Class Honours and am currently working towards a PhD in English Literature. I have extensive teaching experience both inside and outside the classroom and have over eight years' experience in private tuition. I pride myself on being able to accurately assess my pupils' needs and deliver structured, tailor-made lessons to help my pupils achieve the highest possible grades. All my my lessons are informed by the latest research in education and my teaching method embraces the proven strategies of the Assessment is for Learning programme.
I am passionate about my subject and am committed to helping my students maximise their potential in a friendly environment. I am willing to work with either small children, who need extra support getting to grips with the basics of language to older students, preparing for exams, to students beginning university who would like some extra support in coping with the range of texts and theories they will be expected to cope with as undergraduates. I aim to make the work as accessible as I can for each student and adapt my teaching style to fit the abilities and age-group of each student.
In 2016, I left teaching in the secondary school sector to devote myself to private tuition as a full-time professional tutor. I am registered with the Tutor Association and I am devoted to the principles of continued professional development and reflective teaching.
In addition to English, I am also an experienced teacher of piano and history. I am therefore able to tutor primary and secondary school students in the rudiments of music required of them at school level, as well as the more advanced associated board exam work.
PLEASE NOTE I now have a dedicated learning space to maximise my one to one lessons for those pupils who are able to travel to me. The classroom is free from home environment distractions and is equipped with all the learning technology needed to maximise learning potential. When you book lessons with me, you receive all the the technological benefits of school on a one to one basis.
I have eight years' experience in teaching English, with age ranges from 6 to 45. My experience ranges from teaching broad general education (S1 to S3) in classroom settings to S4,5 and 6 who are preparing for their national 5, higher, and advanced higher exams. I have an extremely successful record in turning grades around through a combination of strong teacher-pupil rapport, tightly structured and highly personalised lessons to address your child's specific needs, and a dedicated learner centred approach.
My teaching method involves one to one sessions, lasting roughly an hour. I create a relaxed atmosphere, where either children or adults are able to express their ideas without fear of criticism. Mistakes are our best learning tool, so it is vital to challenge attitudes towards failure in a positive, constructive way. I believe that repetition is the key to all learning, but I incorporate a range of techniques so that this never becomes boring and pupils benefit from being able to build on and consolidate prior learning.
My music work involves a combination of practical and theory exercises, and I also work in harmony with the school curriculum, where this is required.
In literature, I focus closely on core techniques which are essential, but often overlooked in primary and secondary education: spelling, grammar, vocabulary and close reading skills. I have worked in residential schools to help raise literacy by instilling a positive attitude towards the learning of English, and in school, I have worked with pupils from the very gifted to children who need more support to overcome social and emotional barriers to their learning. I am a very intuitive teacher and I responde first and foremost to the needs of my
Pupils.
In my tutoring practice, I really do get it right for every child.
