I am a Director of Learning for STEM overseeing the teaching and learning of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in a secondary school rated good with outstanding sixth form in Southeast London. I am a physics and chemistry specialist who is passionate about the subject and enjoys teaching it. I hold a first class degree in Natural Sciences, a PGCE in secondary science and a distinction in MA Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education from King's College, London. I derive my satisfaction from teaching by seeing young people exercise their science capital to solve real life problems. I believe that education should ultimately seek to develop individuals who are lifelong learners, creative thinkers, risk takers and care about their environment.
I have 11 years experience of teaching science in mainstream secondary schools in London. I teach all the sciences ( Biology, Chemistry, Physics) from Key Stage 3 to GCSE and Physics and Chemistry at A-level and IB Diploma . In my current role I drive the agenda on interdisciplinary teaching and learning across the constituent STEM subjects in the school. I lead teachers across these departments to develop innovative schemes of work situated within 21st century issues such as climate change, food and water security, pandemics and artificial intelligence to develop students creativity and critical thinking abilities. I am also responsible for tracking and monitoring students' progress and implementing intervention programmes. I have 10 years experience in science and mathematics private tuition and have built a reputation of helping students make desired academic progress and prepare them thoroughly for their GCSE and A-level examinations.
I employ experiential and adaptive learning approaches to tutoring. My lessons are tailored to the learning needs and prior knowledge of my tutees. I use a lot of structured and examination questions to scaffold the learning of students. I regularly conduct mini tests and give students' homework which are reviewed, targets set and strategies towards achieving those targets implemented. I improve students' investigative skills by using simulations and modelling. I also coach students on developing effective revision techniques; creating an efficient personal learning timetable and developing their confidence in the subjects.
