Maths and Physics Lessons in Coombe (Kingston)

Coincidentally English is my mother tongue, although the name suggests differently :)

I have finished my PhD in Physics at Imperial College London and currently work at a consultancy firm. I am generally free to tutor on the weekends and evenings on weekdays. Tutorials can either be at my house or at yours (only if you are within a short biking journey - I'm based very close to Kingston hospital).

Tutoring Experience

I have been tutoring for the past decade or so and have guided dozens of tutees through a combination of GCSE and A-Level Maths and Physics. I also helped in the write up process for A-Level Physics coursework; the student went on to get close to full marks for her final submission. Most of my tutees have gone on to achieve top grades in their exams.

My most recent student just got an A for Physics at A2, after previously getting C-D grades in lower sixth. He has now confirmed his placement at his first choice university (see my feedback for details).

Tutoring Approach

In my mind there is no doubt that people learn best when they feel encouraged to do so and feel comfortable in discussing questions and uncertainties. They also happen to be the two most essential things I think any tutor should bring to the table.

My tutorials are generally quite interactive, where often I will cover the basic theory of what the student is learning in class and then have the student explain the basic fundamentals back to me in their own words. I believe this level of interaction is essential to checking the student has really understood the topic and keeps things lively and informal.

I also try and set questions during the tutorial and as homework (depending on the tutees time schedule) as another important means of making sure the student doesn't forget the material we go through.
