I am a current PhD student in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Liverpool, having achieved my MA in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Exeter with a Distinction in 2023. I am also a Bachelor of Law with 1st Class Honours and have 2 years' (and ongoing) experience in working with children as a Teaching Assistant in the independent preparatory sector.
I am driven to share my passion for the ancient Greek and Latin languages and cultures with students of all ages, coupling my professional-level subject knowledge (gained partially through rigorous self-study) with patience and sensitivity for students with varying (including special) needs and their interests.
For over a year (and ongoing), I have tutored pupils across KS2 and 3 on a weekly basis in after-school clubs, with many pupils returning for successive academic terms and wholeheartedly engaging with the learning. I present the concepts in visually appealing and tactile ways that develop the pupils' awareness of the wider world through Classics. I link the language back to cultural phenomena of the ancient (and modern) world and to English words derived from Greek and Latin vocabulary. I also make use of the Greek and Latin to GCSE textbooks by John Taylor, the Cambridge Latin Course, GCSE and A Level past papers and other online and offline resources. I am also experienced at producing and altering my own teaching resources that respond to students' interests, strengths and weaknesses. I have also previously tutored English Literature online. Further and as part of my role as a TA, I have extensive experience in working on a 1-1 basis with pupils and am committed to their personal development and goals.
I have pain-staking attention to detail and drive to pass on accurate knowledge (informed by up-to-date developments in scholarship) on the ancient Greek and Latin languages and cultures. I balance this, however, with the need to motivate students by linking the learning back to the world (and language) they experience. I ensure a solid basis of knowledge is built by guiding students through translations into, as well as from, the Greek and Latin almost from the beginning but on a level corresponding with their ability. My sessions are thoroughly interactive to ensure the student is taken along and helps shape the way the learning is delivered.
