My musical life began as a chorister, before going on to study music and musicology at the universities of Cardiff and Oxford (I was an Academical Clerk at New College).
My three years at Cardiff culminated in a final dissertation which explored Benjamin Britten's 'Songs and Proverbs of William Blake' through a process of narrative theory.
My postgraduate studies gave me an opportunity to further explore current methodologies and approaches in musical scholarship. Topics studied include aesthetics and the social and cultural study of music. My final dissertation focussed on Edward Elgar's final two oratorios, exploring the narrative trajectory across the two works as driven by Elgar's musical treatment of character. During my undergraduate studies I acquired a broad-based education with a focus on aesthetics, analysis, music history and performance.
I have Grade 8 singing, Grade 8 bass guitar, Grade 8 piano and Grade 5 theory.
I currently work at a world-leading concert hall, working with artists on a daily basis whilst singing when and where possible. I spend much of my time working with my band, with forthcoming recording sessions and releases.
I have worked with prospective university students in their applications for music courses, as well as supporting GCSE and A Level students.
I am happy teaching from GCSE level, and all ages and abilities.
My underlying philosopy for my teaching is enjoyment! Learning music in practice and theory is so rewarding and can teach us so much, as well as build confidence.
I will tailor all lessons carefully to support you where you need more help, as well as push you further in those areas you are more confident in. Together we can build a work plan, finding a strategy that works best for you and what you want to achieve.
