William

My name is William Smith, I have a 1st Class Masters Degree in Electronic Engineering from Reading University which I graduated from at the end of 2015. I have had a number of work placements that include working with a private defence contractor on training simulations and for the government working on development for spacecraft, specifically communication systems. I recently completed my PhD in Robotics at Edinburgh and Heriot Watt Universities and I'm using tutoring to supplement my income.

I am able to tutor in Maths and Physics at GCSE level and A-Level Maths, Further Maths and Physics, all of which I did to A2 level and with my further training at degree level I feel very confident in teaching. Further Maths would require some extra preparation for me as not all aspects of that were covered during my degree.

Tutoring Experience

I am a committed, empathetic and understanding teacher. I have experience helping out in undergraduate classes and I have some experience of tutoring at a secondary school level (reference available on request). Unfortunately I am not able to host students, instead I am happy to travel to your home or a public place such as a library for lessons. During my time at university I worked on a peer support program for 3 years helping students who were having a difficult time at university so I am used to dealing with students who are struggling with a variety of issues, I also underwent a CRB check for that role.

Tutoring Approach

Our first lesson would involve me finding out exactly what your goals are for our lessons, getting to know what learning approach is best for you and what particular areas of maths and physics you need to improve and on what level you are currently at. After that I'd go away and put together a simple program for us to follow. This usually takes the form of either predefined lessons organised by myself or a more flexible approach designed to deal with your ongoing learning and the problems you encounter during them, for example you might have had a lesson that you struggled with recently and need help going over the material. Often a mix of both approaches is used.

I'm available for lessons in and around the Edinburgh area.
