Let's unlock your potential!
1st Class Degree Geoscientist and Teacher qualified to tutor Science and Geography.
Organic Chemistry, Earth Science, Geopolitics, Natural Hazards, Astrophysics, Earthquake & Tsunami Defense, Nuclear Power, Fracking ...!
There is so much more to science and geography than test tubes and oxbow lakes!
I am a qualified Geography Teacher and now professional Geoscientist and with over 8 years experience in the energy exploration industry. When I am not abroad detecting earthquakes I am inspired to teach my passion that is Science, Geography and Geology. I am a fellow of the Geological Society of London and member of the European Association for Geoscientists and Engineers. I won the Hodson Najoan Geological Mapping Award - For best Dissertation Mapping Project - University of Southampton 2006.
I am a qualified Geography and Science teacher and now professional Geoscientist having completed my Master's level PGCE in secondary Geography in 2007, I hold Qualified Teacher Status.
I have now tutored in my spare time since 2009 for Key Stages 3 & 4 (Combined, Triple and iGCSE 9-1) in both Science and Geography, and up to A-level for Geology and Geography.
The requirements of the students tutored are wide ranging. I have worked with students who excel in these subjects and so can facilitate full growth of their scientific and geographic skills. At the same time I have provided a supportive and alternative learning environment in which less able students can establish the foundation principles of each topic with a key aim to stoke enthusiasm, enjoyment for the subject and so grow their scientific understanding.
I give regular student Science/Geoscience careers talks to various Secondary Schools and Sixth Form colleges around Somerset. I am also regularly invited to local primary schools to deliver geography and science learning days (often dressed as Indiana Jones!).
I work very closely with University of Southampton, Bristol and Leeds (Geoscience/Earth Science Faculties), where I have a strong understanding of the UCAS process and so help maximize student chance of success with their higher education application process.
I pride myself in my open, friendly and supportive approach to teaching and tutoring. I am able to differentiate my teaching to meet the specific needs of the student and so accommodate a range of learning styles to ensure the maximum potential for the student is realized.
My teaching philosophy is based on encouraging students to think for oneself, using real-world examples wherever possible. I start from topics the students are comfortable with and move gradually towards more complex areas as their confidence builds. I use questions and examples to check understanding continually. I dont lecture to students or just ask them to memorize things.
My experience has been that one-to-one personal tuition has a unique value to students because of the ability to resolve the students personal barriers to learning in a way that lays the foundations for a deep and lasting understanding of the subject.
I usually focus on exam-style or past paper questions in order to check, practice and perfect the students understanding and technique. I also give a lot of emphasis to some of the less obvious but vital skills such as essay structure and technique, logical thought, and the effective use of numbers and graphs.
I am also able to add a value in a way that many tutors cannot, and that is through the fact that I am a professional international Geoscientist. I can equip the student with latest global case studies and industry view points, and even provide access to technical hardware/software. This is something that will give the student a considerable advantage in not only pushing their grade potential or UCAS applications but in forming an appreciation and enthusiasm for what career opportunities are available within the broad spectrum of science and geography.
Due to very high demand I am prioritising requests for online Science GSCE subjects.
