*** New video intro! ***

I'm empathetic and a life-long learner. I personally achieved an 'A' in maths at GCSE & A-level and am 2/3 of the way through a physics degree with the OU.

I have six children, five of whom are home educated.

Three months ago my eldest daughter began studying for her maths GCSE and we anticipate her being ready to sit the exam next year and get the top grade, when she will be fourteen. She does make me look good but in all honesty even though I of course help her where she needs it, she deserves all the credit - she works very hard.

Fun fact: in 1998 at age 16 I entered Robot Wars with the robot I'd built called 'Nora Botty'. She had hair curlers, and an angle grinder for a tongue.

Tutoring Experience

I help to home educate my own children, I have helped family members prepare for maths exams and I have helped a friend who is a qualified teacher improve his confidence in maths. Currently I am tutoring my niece ahead of her GCSE exams.

Tutoring Approach

I have tutees work out as much as they can without my explaining anything, not (only) because I'm work-shy, but because the further they can get under their own steam the more the difficult ideas will stick, and their confidence will improve.

When it comes to explaining things in maths I try to describe where ideas and techniques come from, from first (or simpler) principles to help the tutee structure the knowledge coherently in his or her mind.

It is a truism to say that the vast majority of the learning process happens in the learner's own head, and so as well as my being a source of information I regard giving encouragement and helping to improve the tutee's confidence as critical aspects of my role.

I take bookings through an online portal where you can select a session slot to suit you, according to when I can be available.
