As 2023 GCSE's are now over, I am now taking new student enquiries as seven of my students take the next step on their academic journey. * my availability is now limited to online sessions.
I am an experienced tutor and have been providing tuition in the local area since 2013; I have also been working closely with a local high school the past six years to provide tuition to a number of their students in need of additional support. I absolutely love working one to one with students to help them reach their potential and to feel confident in their studies - I strongly believe that learning should be enjoyable and strive to make tuition sessions interesting and (where possible) fun. Outside of providing tuition, I work part time as Student Engagement Coordinator for the University of Worcester.
When not working, I enjoy Tae Kwon Do, having attained my black belt in 2018, and drawing. My husband and I also have three dogs and two horses to keep us busy in our spare time.
Whilst at the University of Exeter, I was trained as a tutor with the student ambassador scheme; working at a local high school with a class of fourteen GCSE level students. I was also recruited as a mentor for the Brightside Trust on the Realising opportunities program; working with students on the STAR program. These students were identified as capable of succeeding in higher education but unlikely to attend for various reasons. Following graduation, I worked with special educational needs (SEN) students at the Worcester College of Technology; promoting literacy and numeracy and delivering a range of educational workshops. I now work for the Library Services at the University of Worcester; part of my role being to assist students with their study skills and research.
I continued to work as a self-employed tutor upon leaving university and have been able to assist students with a range of difficulties including dyslexia, dyscalculia and aphantasia. I completed a masters degree in psychology because of my interest in supporting students with special educational needs - with a particular interest in dyscalculia. I have extensive experience of working with disillusioned students, students lacking confidence and those that the system has failed for one reason or another. I now work with the Chantry school; providing additional tuition to students when required.
I currently tutor up to fourteen students a week; guiding them through entrance exams, SATs, GCSEs and QTS exams. I have extensive experience of working one to one with students of all abilities and ages and also those with learning and behavioural difficulties including dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia and autism. I am also happy to assist with home-schooling.
I find working with students one-on-one extremely rewarding; building confidence, challenging high achieving students (those that need an extra 'push' to reach their full potential) and generally helping students to understand study skills and improve their information retention. I typically tutor students long term but have also had students for more intensive study periods in the build up to exams. Most of my clients are word-of-mouth referrals, which is fantastic! (but leads to fewer reviews on here unfortunately - more references are available if required).
I have a systematic approach to lessons and provide a free initial consultation so that we can discuss what you would like to get out of the tutoring process.
I like to ensure that all students have a strong foundation in the subject before attempting the more difficult aspects. In maths, for example, I believe that a good understanding of number bonds, times tables and standard techniques is essential for confidence at key stage 3 and above. I am also happy to liaise with the student's school teacher(s) and can focus on specific topics as required.
The first session enables me to identify the perceived strengths and weaknesses of the student - how they personally feel about aspects of the subject and the areas which require further attention. I aim to create a relaxed atmosphere with a focus on developing a thorough understanding rather than aiming to speed through the desired content. This has the effect of gradually building confidence in their own understanding of the subject; leading to better overall retention. In addition, though no less important, I try to make the sessions fun! With younger children, mathematical card games or word association games can build an understanding of number bonds and vocabulary, respectively. I hope to inspire a true interest in the subject by making the material as relevant and interesting as possible - tailoring the content to the individual where possible.
Through the tuition process, I also aim to introduce study and revision skills to the student; essential for their continued academic development and ensuring that progress continues beyond our arranged tutoring sessions.
In 2020 I moved my business online using Zoom - with fantastic results. Utilising a wide range of fantastic online resources and screen sharing, it has been possible to continue to provide the same high standard of tuition as would be possible in person. I now continue to operate online as a cost-effective option (even more so with the current cost of travel).
Most recent students have found me through word of mouth or in partnership with a local high school; further references are available if desired.
Please feel free to get in touch to ask any questions or discuss your requirements with no obligation to book.
