After an early career as a middle school teacher, I moved to a university physics department where I taught a wide variety of courses as well as conducting research in astronomy. In 2014 I retired as a professor of astrophysics at the University of Birmingham and have now moved to the Tenbury Wells area.
I have been involved in science education for over 40 years, with students ranging from 10 years old to undergraduates. My initial teaching experience was as a Middle School teacher, before studying for a PhD and then becoming a university lecturer, and later professor. I taught a variety of physics, maths and astronomy courses to undergraduate students throughout my university career, and also tutored physics students on placements within secondary schools in Birmingham. I started home tutoring, mostly at GCSE and A level, in 2015. I have always had excellent feedback from my students.
Drawing on my experience, I aim to convey the excitement of science and the usefulness of mathematics to my students. To be successful in maths or science it is essential to understand the key concepts, and to be able to make use of them, rather than simply to memorise facts. My approach is therefore to identify areas where a student is struggling to grasp the ideas, and work with them to address their difficulties. Students will find me friendly, approachable and interested in their learning. I will travel to locations within about 10 miles of my home for tutorials - e.g. Clifton, Tenbury, Great Witley, Abberley, Martley, Stourport, Bewdley. More distant locations (Ludlow, Leominster, Worcester etc.), and also tutorials at my house, may be possible by arrangement. I can do some tutoring online, but have found that face-to-face tutoring is much more satisfactory.
