My name is Tommy, and I'm a passionate, sociable, and creative educator. In September 2025, I will begin a PhD in Spanish and Latin American Literature at the University of Oxford, but as as tutor I specialise in all humanities subjects. Experience has shown me that a well-matched teacher can transform the prospects of a young learner. In the past, my experiences as a musician, as a writer, an academic, and even in the advertising world, have allowed me to make connections with my students outside of the curriculum, meaning we can engage in every lesson with complete trust and enthusiasm. My childhood with diplomatic parents has made me comfortable adapting to new peoples and cultures, and I can't wait to visit even more corners of the world as part of my tutoring journey.
I have tutored for two years across a variety of subjects, including:
- English and Maths GCSE tuition, working with SEND pupils and Looked After Children (LACs)
- English and Spanish A-Level tuition.
- Undergraduate mentoring and dissertation coaching across humanities subjects.
- English as a foreign language (TEFL) across a variety of ages.
My approach, although adapted to each new student and every subject, consists of the following stages:
Tailored Preparation & Initial Assessment: Begin with a structured diagnostic review—evaluating reports, past work, and habits—to identify strengths, weaknesses, and revision strategies.
Study Planning & Proven Techniques: Co-create personalised short- and long-term study plans using methods like spaced repetition, active recall, and incremental goal setting. Equip the student with practical tools like revision checklists and timetables for use outside of our sessions.
Exam Coaching with Scaffolding: Use the “I do, we do, you do” method to build confidence under timed conditions, gradually increasing independence and exam-readiness through practical modelling and practice.
Mentorship Beyond the Classroom: Foster confidence, discipline, and motivation through engaging activities that connect learning to real-world contexts—encouraging debate, critical thinking, and personal growth.
Wellbeing & Balance: Emphasise physical and mental health through structured breaks, recreation, and shared activities, ensuring sustained productivity and a positive attitude toward learning.
I'd be very happy to discuss in more detail how these pillars will be adapted to your specific needs, and those of the subject at hand. I look forward to hearing from you!
