Online Tuition for Maths and Entrance Exams

I've just graduated from New College, Oxford, where I read Maths and Philosophy 2020-2024. Before Oxford, I attended a grammar school in Reading 2013-2020.

I've consistently attained a high standard of academic excellence, achieving 5A*s on my A-Levels, a distinction on my preliminary university exams and a double first on my degree (first class classification on both my undergraduate component and my masters component). I'm also an elected scholar of New College, Oxford, and have been awarded prizes for my performance on university and college examinations whilst at Oxford.

I love both maths and philosophy and enjoy tutoring both these subjects for GCSE and A-Level, as well as tutoring for Oxford entrance exams and interviews and 11+ entrance exams.

Tutoring Experience

I have experience tutoring:

  • 11+ exams (Verbal reasoning; Non-verbal reasoning; Maths; English)

  • GCSE Mathematics (with MyTutor under a government contract)

  • A-Level Philosophy (Epistemology)

  • Admissions for Oxford Philosophy (mock tutorials on the first-year Oxford philosophy course; mock interviews)

Tutoring Approach

I approach tutoring mathematics by examples - so teaching a particular technique or concept in mathematics by looking at lots of examples of problems of applying the technique or concept, and then getting the student to work through increasingly trickier problems, applying the concept or technique for themselves. The real teaching is done when the student fails to apply the concept on their own - I gradually give the student more and more hints to help them solve the problem and increase their understanding.

My approach for philosophy involves briefly sketching the view or argument under discussion, and then getting the student to defend or critique the view whilst I take the opposing view. I'd then probe the student's arguments and defence/or critique of the view, and see how far the student can respond. In proceeding this way, this allows the student to actually do philosophy, and this is a very natural way to explore and discuss the surrounding issues and concepts related to the view under discussion.
