I have just finished my 4th Year (3rd year intercalation, BA Medical Science, 2:1) studying Medicine at Oxford University and reside in North Yorkshire.
I am a massive sports fan, especially rugby, and am fascinated by the sciences.
During 6th Form I volunteered in Year 10 Biology and Year 7 Mathematics lessons as well as mentored AS and GCSE level biologists and chemists on a weekly basis. From this I learnt of the importance of explaining topics at varying levels of depths according to the required understanding of different students and is something I have carried forward with me. I love to use analogies and funky memory aids and tools in order to help difficult concepts stick. In addition to this, by encouraging students to take an active role in their education and prompting them to identify aspects within their syllabus that they struggle with they will become more well rounded within their subject.
Since leaving school I have also taken part in mentoring schemes such as Zero Gravity and so am used to providing students with the tools needed to make the step up to University.
Lessons will usually consist of 1hr sessions conducted over Zoom (at no detriment to the quality of sessions).
I am a big advocate of spaced repetition and active recall and will regularly look to utilise these in sessions. I enjoy revisiting topics and concepts and attempting to explain these to others, part of my motivation for wanting to tutor. I believe this is why I am a great supporter of the Feynman technique, demonstrating understanding through the ability to explain a topic to others. This technique played a large part in my learning and still does to this day, so I will look to employ a 'teach the teacher' style once we have visited and reviewed topics.
I appreciate there is much more to life than studying and this is why I always strive to work smarter and not necessarily harder; it is much more about the quality of the work you do rather than the sheer number of hours you commit.
