Professional tutor in maths and sciences available for short- and long-term arrangements. Experienced in tutoring a wide range of ages and abilities from S1 through to Advanced Higher and beyond, a patient and thorough tutoring style with a proven record of success.
I am a qualified teacher of secondary mathematics and science with over 3,000 hours of private tuition experience in science and maths, having completed my PGCE course in Canterbury 2018/19 and NQT year in London 2019/20. I hold a current Disclosure Scotland certificate covering work with both adults and children and I am registered with GTC Scotland as a teacher of Physics and Mathematics. Formerly, I worked for nearly 10 years in NHS laboratories, during which time I mentored college students as part of a very successful local apprenticeship scheme. I have been tutoring professionally for more than eight years, and have worked with a wide range of students of varying demographics and at a variety of academic levels, from primary education through to university preparation. I currently live outside Edinburgh with my wife and two children.
Current availability for students studying maths, physics and chemistry at National 5/GCSE or Higher/AS; maths and physics at Advanced Higher/A2; and early degree topics in maths, physics, and engineering subjects (excluding computing).
In addition to over 3,000 hours' tutoring experience across England and Scotland, I have several years' experience training and mentoring in a professional environment, tutoring students on an apprenticeship course in partnership with a local college. The scheme was widely hailed as a great success, and all six of the students I tutored over the course of two years went on to thrive in in laboratory based positions, either within the NHS or with private firms. I have been tutoring in Edinburgh for five years across a diverse range of ages and abilities, and I am GTCS-registered to teach both maths and physics.
My tutoring follows a fundamentals approach; everything in both maths and physics is based on earlier concepts, and thorough understanding of the foundations makes advanced topics much more accessible. I focus on shoring up weak points in a student's comprehension, but do not neglect to nurture their strengths. Tutoring is often student-directed, so that my students can make best use of their allotted time; students can revisit previously covered topics for a more solid foundation or draw links to upcoming topics to support comprehension as required. Much of my tutoring approach is exam-focused, improving exam technique and linking to methods of assessment as a way to increase assessment performance.
