I completed my BA Hons degree in Languages, Economics and Politics at Kingston University (formerly Polytechnic) and continued my studies with a Master’s Degree in Politics at Warwick University (awarded with Distinction). I then trained to teach at Wolverhampton Polytechnic, completing a Certificate in Education (FE). I have contributed to a number of different professional working groups during my career. I continue to enjoy my interaction with students in the form of planning and delivering off-timetable enterprise events at various schools. I am married with three grown-up sons.
I have recently retired, having enjoyed a 33-year career in teaching, working in both a Roman Catholic comprehensive girls’ school and a highly successful boys’ grammar school. During my early career I taught German to ‘A’ Level and led a Business Studies and a vocational education department for 17 years and 7 years respectively. In the latter stages of my career I have managed General Studies 'A' Level courses (winning a national award), and led both Government and Politics, Citizenship and PSHE departments.
Most recently I have been teaching German to the management team of a local printing company, whose parent company is based in Germany. This has involved developing a study programme in general and business German tailored to the interests and requirements of the managers concerned.
Through my years of 'A' Level and GCSE teaching I have recognised that students have many different issues which hamper their exam performance – some related to understanding of the subject matter, some related to recall of that subject matter and/or subject skills, e.g. analysis and evaluation, and some related to exam technique. I have successfully used strategies to address all these types of issue. During my teaching career students always recognised and appreciated the enthusiasm I have for my subjects.
