Timothy

I am 70 years old, married with two adult sons. I was born in the UK and spent my childhood in a Surrey village, where my mother was a GP. I was educated at prep, private and grammar schools in the South East (Epsom College/Dorking Grammar School). After leaving school I went to Bangor University for a year where I studied English/History/Classical Studies. I left to devote myself to creative writing and traveled widely, working in different jobs. I spent 2 years working with chiIdren in need of special care. I completed a BA(Hons) degree in Peace Studies because I wanted to become a mediator working in Conflict Resolution. I then trained as a Speech and Voice coach for 4 years before training as a professional actor at The Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London. After working as an actor and voice-over, I completed a PGCE in English/Drama and Media Studies. I am very well read and have many interests which include writing and theatre. I am also very interested in History (especially of Mediterranean peoples), Music, Art, Gardening and Cooking.

TEACHING BACKGROUND
I have 30 years of secondary teaching experience. I have taught in grammar, state comprehensive and independent Schools in the UK and Canada. I have mainly taught in co-educational schools, but have also taught for 5 years in an all girls private school. My main subject areas are English, Drama and History. I have also taught RS and Philosophy. I have a track record of excellent exam outcomes at GCSE and A Level, the great majority of pupils I have taught achieving A*-B. Most of the A Level pupils I have taught have won places at Russell group universities, including Oxbridge.

He has a in-depth and broad level of knowledge of the various plays as well as assessment criteria needed by the exam boards. Timothy was a very useful and helpful tutor who homeschooled me throughout year 11. He has a vast amount of knowledge of all the topics in literature and language and gave me insights into the poems that I never even considered, and further developed my understanding of the other poems.
Timothy also helped me a lot with creative writing, and explained it in ways that helped me understand it much more that I previously did.
As well as the poems, Timothy helped me understand more about the novels Christmas Carol, Lord of the Flies and The Merchant of Venice, as i had some large gaps in knowledge that needed to be filled.

Overall, Timothy was very useful and helpful and vastly improved my knowledge and understanding. I would definitely recommend using Timothy as your tutor.

Timothy provided tutoring for my son to support him with English language and English literature, in the run up to his GCSEs. My son had lost confidence in his English skills and in particular his abilities to write at length. Timothy gave my son some writing exercises which which really helped him to focus his ideas and to unblock any anxieties he had, which were making it difficult for him to write creatively and with detail. Over time, we saw a huge increase in my son's confidence and this spread into all his other subjects too. With Timothy's help, my son's skills in all areas of English language and literature were very clearly improved. He understood what was being asked of him in an exam and how to answer the questions effectively. Before working with Timothy, my son's PPE results were 3, 3. After working with Timothy he was achieving 6 s in his PPEs at school. Although we don't know his actual GCSE results yet, he came home from the exams full of confidence, having written a great deal and told me there was nothing in the papers that worried him. We are grateful for Timothy's hard work, his friendly and professional approach and the excellent resources he provided. I have no hesitation in recommending him as a tutor and will most probably enlist his help again in 3 year's time for my other son!

Our son had a great lesson with Timothy and his lessons and communications were clear and well structured. Unfortunately for us, we are now contracted with a specific exam centre to use their tutor as there is a practical NEA course part that has to be completed directly with them. Therefore we cannot currently commit to tuition with Timothy, however closer to exam time we hope that he might have some availability so that our son can have a couple of exam prep lessons for extra exam prep support.

Tutoring Approach

Most people require a tutor to support exam course study. First and foremost, I seek to ensure that a pupil achieves this aim by targeting the exam mark band criteria. However, a focus on exam course criteria can be very mechanistic and destroy real interest in the subject. We all learn in unique ways, and so I try to respond to the particular needs of each pupil and build skills from whatever point, and in whatever area, support may be needed. I believe as far as possible that learning should be enjoyable and result in a definite growth in confidence and self-belief. I use humor a lot when I teach and I am also very imaginative in the methods I use. I hope that my enthusiasm for my subjects is infectious and that it is transferred to pupils. I believe in clarity, consistency and challenge.
