Over the last 20 years, I have been known to be a teacher that is highly engaging and interactive. In fact, my creative and evidence based form of teaching approaches is why over the last 12 years I have also been an advisory teacher for the NHS and a couple of Local Authorities. In this role, I get to apply my psychology in order to help train and support other teachers or support staff in finding ways to meet the needs of young people. My Former Head of Department was a Chief Examiner in Psychology for many years and has taught me all the things that are expected in the exam (for AQA at least!). I am known for being particularly good with essay writing - ensuring that students are well structured and yet get to the point with the appropriate use of terminology. My success in developing students writing style comes from the three years I taught English across KS3/KS4 in which time I ensured 70% of my students successfully got grades A*- B at GCSE level. To enable me to get such results, I try to you use humour and storytelling to engage my students and make learning as fun and as easy as possible - for this reason, I feel that this method makes me approachable to all students.
I have been a teacher for 20 years and an advisory teacher for the last 12 years. I have taught Psychology, Sociology, English Language, Citizenship, PSHE and Learning to Learn. In regards to exams, I have an excellent track record with 70% of my Psychology students achieving grades A*-B.
I also for the last 12 years taught elements of psychology in practice for NHS Mental Health Trust and Local Authorities. Teaching or consulting staff in the areas of attachment, social emotional mental health difficulties, and stress responses in children has meant my experience and insight is beyond just the textbook.
I apply Psychology in my method of teaching. A good example of this is applying my knowledge of memory through association. My methods will always try and explain concepts in a relevant and meaningful way that is personal to you. By doing this, there is a greater chance that what is taught is on a deeper level of processing and understanding. I also try to teach using varied learning styles to keep things interesting and engaging.
