Sophie

I am an actor and qualified mathematics teacher with 4+ years experience, teaching and tutoring students from year 3 to GCSE. I am based in South East London and can provide one-to-one tutoring online or in-person at your home. I have a strong track record of success with tutoring with one past student achieving two grades higher than predicted by the school in her SATs and another passing the entrance exam to a very prestigious grammar school with flying colours. With my other passion in life being musical theatre, I am a very enthusiastic and positive teacher and tutor and aim to make all of my sessions fun and engaging.

Tutoring Experience

I have A Levels in Maths, Biology and Chemistry. I graduated from Swansea University in 2018 with a 2:1 in Marine Biology. I graduated from Birmingham City University in 2021 with a PGDE in Mathematics Education with Leadership in Learning. I have been teaching maths in secondary schools for the past 4+ years where I taught KS3 and KS4 (foundation and higher GCSE) and also have experience in primary settings from my time supply teaching. I graduated from Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in November with a masters in Musical Theatre.

Tutoring Approach

I am a creative and enthusiastic teacher with a passion for building pupils resilience and problem solving skills. A fundamental part of my teaching approach is retrieval. I will begin each session by retrieving information from a previous session and dealing with misconceptions. I will also ensure that I go through strong worked examples each session so that the students have examples that they can use to complete practice on their own. Due to my teaching experience, I have a tried and tested collection of resources for a variety of topics. I also encourage students to complete their own independent learning between sessions. I will ask the students to show me some of the work from their lessons in school so that I am working cohesively with the information provided by their teacher. I am also happy to support with any homework provided by the student's teacher.
