Sophie

Maths and English Teacher in Hove

"Sophie is an amazing tutor. My son was a very reluctant learner and school-attender and he has been completely turned around by Sophie’s patience and hard-work. She makes his learning really fun and tailored to his interests. He always comes away beaming and cried recently when we missed a session at half-term! I thoroughly recommend her to anyone looking for maths and English help for their children. She will make a significant and lasting difference straight away, and give your child’s learning the focus and attention it needs." Clare, parent.

"Since starting with Sophie, my daughter's confidence in both maths and literacy has improved greatly. Sophie has been a very positive, encouraging and supportive teacher enabling my Daughter to learn at her own pace whilst building upon her skills to improve her understanding. I would highly recommend Sophie to anyone considering a tutor as her approach has been the nurturing and reassuring influence my Daughter has needed to grow her confidence and ability." Sharon, parent.

Tutoring Experience

I have been teaching privately for over a decade. It is a rewarding job that I love, and put my heart and soul into. My main ethos is to to build students' confidence and make learning fun and enjoyable. Once they feel good about themselves and the subject matter, everything else (e.g. progression and attainment) falls into place. Lessons are not a chore, but something for students to look forward to and enjoy.

I undertook my teacher training in London, with school placements in Hackney and Tottenham. I moved to Brighton after qualifying in 2011, where I taught as a supply teacher for a year in various schools around Brighton and Hove and surrounding areas. Supply work led to my employment at a Junior School in Hove for 3 years, where I was involved in running a number of intervention classes. Whilst working at school, I set up my tutoring business, which I now focus on full-time.

Tutoring Approach

I use a positive approach with students, striving to build up confidence and enable them to see that learning can be fun, enjoyable and rewarding. I carefully tailor lesson content to each student's requirements and adapt my style of tutoring to fit in with each individual pupil. I use many practical resources along with discussion and modelling examples, to really solidify a true and deep understanding. Only when a student really 'gets it', will we move on to more formal, written work. My positive reinforcement really encourages pupils and I am able to provide a safe working environment where it's OK to make mistakes.
