I am a gentle, friendly, qualified Teacher and DBS checked. I have a passion to build the confidence of young learners irrespective of their levels of ability, and prepare them for the next phase of their learning journey.
My combined teaching experience spans over 21 years. I have a QTS in Mathematics, and have taught Mathematics and Statistics to students at KS3, GCSE, A Level and Higher Education, since 1999. I also have a PhD in Economics and have experience in teaching Economics at A level and University level.
In my experience, students have varied needs and learning styles. For this reason, I take the trouble to get to get to know each prospective learner in an initial free consultation before we begin tutoring sessions, and then tailor my tutoring to suit each student. Sometimes, I may recommend face-to-face sessions if it is best for the learner. I travel to the learner's home at no extra cost if they live within my little town.
One strategy that has worked with my tutees is my approach of building from the known to the unknown, beginning from the concrete to the abstract using real life examples students can relate with to explain difficult concepts. Only after I am certain that a student understands a concept, do I get them to practice and consolidate their understanding by solving questions, which we return to review later. That way, students develop their understanding of otherwise, difficult concepts in addition to growing into more confident, independent learners.
For students who sign up for revision and exam preparation, I teach exam technique which we practise by working through past questions and addressing the gaps identified. I would also train them to understand the requirements of examiners so that they can learn to present or structure their work to score maximum marks.
To sum up, I get to know my students needs, adapt my teaching to their learning styles, and train them to develop study skills which turns them into more confident, independent learners.
