I hold friendly but focused sessions, concentrating on the particular needs of the student. Some students just want to pass their GCSE with good grades, and others want to excel at A level and go on to study in Higher Education, and so my approach depends on the student.
I hold a Master of Physics Degree with First Class Honours, and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education, in Secondary Education in Physics from the University of Southampton, as well as a PhD in theoretical cosmology from the University of Sussex. I also hold Qualified Teacher Status. I am enthusiastic, easy to get on with, and will fully support and encourage students to reach their potential.
Comments from previous tutees:
'As Removed tutor Sam was very helpful to me as a I found a few aspects of physics A2 challenging. Sam had no problem in showing me where I was going wrong and explaining things in as simple as possible fashion. Also he gave me some good exam techniques, structuring the longer questions and some good layout tips for the math based questions.'
'Your help has given him so much more confidence in his ability to study the subject [A2 maths]. Your ability to tune into his way of learning and adjust your style of teaching has really impressed me. He said you made things much easier to understand, especially some of the more complicated parts of the course he was struggling with. I felt he really needed a one to one approach and that was what you provided prefectly for him.'
'Mr Sam Young gave me math tuition for a period of four months at GCSE level. I was initially working at a C grade and I gradually improved to a grade A. Lessons were friendly and very helpful throughout the months. Explanations were easily understood as well as positive. Overall, the experience was helpful and definitely worth it.'
'I found it much easier to understand the maths and theory of physics because it is a one-to-one session. I would recommend Sam to anyone else doing physics A level. It really made a difference, and but also what helped was that you were friendly and patient.'
I hold Qualified Teacher Status, and a PGC#k#E in Secondary Education in Physics - my main areas of expertise are in students taking A levels and GCSE's, but I have experience working with younger secondary students and primary.
My tutoring approach is based on asking questions to provoke thought and elicit responses, asking the students to explain their reasoning and ideas, to ensure that they have fully understood the material and concepts. However, all students learn differently, so I employ a variety of different teaching methods tailored to the student - some students need help understanding concepts, some with exam technique, and some may need tips to aid memory and recall.
I am quite flexible with how the sessions are run - some students require help towards the end of the course to aid revision, and others prefer sessions throughout the course to ensure full understanding.
