I currently live near Bridgnorth, in the beautiful county of Shropshire.
I enjoy the relative freedom tutoring affords to truly engage with the individual students. Many of my tutees aspire to improve their grades and some are ambitious to excel academically, as a stepping-stone to further education and training- and ultimately to their chosen careers.
I previously taught secondary English in a Worcestershire school for eleven years and have tutored privately for nine years. I am an experienced examiner of 8 years. As an experienced examiner, I have been very successful at helping young people achieve their personal academic goals.
I focus my sessions on the key skills that inform both Literature and Language GCSEs: language and structural analysis, inference, understanding the intentions of the writers and effective creative writing. I generally achieve this through probing questioning techniques and overt teaching of self-reflection in relation to the mark schemes.
I also have a particular interest in promoting self-directed learning, where it is appropriate, and delight in encouraging young people to find the aspects of English that are relevant to their own lives and interests, whether this be through the enjoyment of their choice of fiction, or through non-fiction writing- opening up a world of agency, to affect the topics that interest them most.
A more student-centred approach to teaching can be particularly beneficial to the broad spectrum of young people who have found themselves disenchanted with a conventional model of schooling. I therefore enjoy working with students who are home-schooled, to help them find an approach to education that nurtures their individual potential and interests, to enjoy learning more on their own terms.
