A Classics graduate who was Deputy Head of English teaching from KS3-KS5. I have a warm and friendly teaching persona and due to my experience, I am flexible and adaptable in my teaching style to meet your needs.
I have recently been Deputy Head of English at a large secondary school in East Croydon in my third year of teaching, teaching the national curriculum from KS3 through to KS5. I have taught Year 11 for two years as well as Year 12 and Year 13. I was the English NEA coursework coordinator working with pupils on editing and redrafting their English coursework component. Prior to this, I completed the TeachFirst graduate scheme.
During my first year of teaching, I was part of the UCAS team, organising mentor meetings to help pupils aspiring for top universities on their personal statements. Specifically, I mentored and coached an individual who went on to study Classics at Cambridge, organising personal statement and mock interview sessions, on account of my own experience of the Oxbridge application process.
Regarding tutoring, I have been a volunteer English tutor for KS5 pupils for Tutor the Nation whilst undertaking my Master's in Classics.
During my undergraduate degree I worked for My Tutor, tutoring English KS3-KS4.
As a neurodiverse individual with ADHD, my teaching philosophy is to provide pupils with clear direct instruction, breaking down and segmenting key information with specific focal points to track throughout their learning. Having undertaken Higher Latin modules in both my degrees, I have a love of syntax and grammar and encourage pupils, as part of my teaching style, to break down a sentence into its component parts and zoom in, saying a lot about a little. I am also a visual learner and therefore use dual-coding to help guide more creative and original thought and help cement information into a pupil's long term memory.
