I am a highly experienced, fully qualified teacher specialising in Biology. I attended university at Southampton (medical school), Oxford Brookes and London Institute of Education, and hold BSc and PGCE qualifications. I have a particular interest in human biology/medicine.
I am now retired from full-time teaching in schools/colleges and am available for online and in-person tutoring for all the main exam boards.
I am an examiner in Biology for two exam boards, at GCSE and A level (UK and International), marking several exams each year.
I have been teaching for 40 years, latterly as Head of Department and Head of Faculty, as well as being a Teaching and Learning Coach for other teachers/lecturers. I have taught in schools and colleges at all levels, including special needs, undergraduate degree courses, and consultancy for the Open University. However, the bulk of my teaching has been at A level.
I have also tutored individual students for many years. For some, I have been their only teacher, for others I have provided extra support around school or college courses. At all levels and ages, results have been very gratifying.
My approach to tutoring is dependent on the needs of the individual student: for example, improving their knowledge and understanding of difficult topics, help with exam technique, or in tackling particular types of question (application, evaluation and suggest questions are favourites, and some hate maths questions). AQA students often need support for the synoptic essay. These needs usually change during the course of tutoring as students gain confidence. I encourage students to ask questions about anything they don't fully understand, and contextualise the problem to clarify it. By trying out their ideas verbally they can hone their exam answers. After many years of teaching and marking, I am familiar with the common errors that students make, and have a variety of ways to help them learn difficult bits! I am very approachable and want to help - it's why I became a teacher.
