I am an American who has made her home in the UK. I was drawn to England by my love of English literature. After completing my MPhil on Shakespeare's Comic Heroines and Queen Elizabeth I, I began to teach at University level at Exeter and Plymouth universities. Since retiring in 2015 I have been tutoring students for GCSE and A level English Language and Literature.
I have taught A level English literature and GCSE English to a wide range of students in different contexts: from tutoring international students in a London 'crammer' to preparing young people in Further Education and mature students in Adult Education for their examinations. During my years as a Lecturer in English Literature at the University of Plymouth, I maintained my involvement with Secondary Education through training as an Examiner for OCR and EdExcel. Most recently I have been teaching to the AQA syllabus.
What I most value about tutoring is the opportunity to get to know my students, and to tailor my teaching to the individual's interests and needs. My students grow in confidence and expand their capacities of understanding and expression through the experience in tutorials of close attention, guidance and challenge.
