Hiya,
I am a final year medical student who has taken three years out of my course to do a PhD at Barts Cancer Institute, Charterhouse Square in London. Previously, I completed my International Baccalaureate in Denmark, achieving a total of 40 out of 45 points (which put me in the top 7% worldwide). I am a highly motivated and organised person and I have enjoyed teaching in the past when I have had the opportunity. I am interested in further developing my skills as a tutor and I hope to provide a productive environment for learning.
I have not done formalised, paid tutoring before. I have tutored kids in chemistry and English back in Denmark, most of which has been on a voluntary basis. For this reason, I plan to only take on a single student so that I can focus on providing robust and well-planned tutoring sessions.
My teaching approach will differ slightly based on which subject (maths or biology) that I will be tutoring the student in. Fundamentally, my teaching will be focused on providing understanding while also nurturing the student's own inquisitiveness. I am more than happy to iterate upon my approach and to have the student's own preferences incorporated.
Most importantly, I will provide a structured programme for each lesson based on the material sent to me by the student . The first 10-15 minutes will be used to test recall from previous lessons, using flashcards or a couple of questions that I have written in preparation for the session. I will also be encouraging the student to make these themselves to practice their recall on a daily basis. I think developing a good routine for practicing recall is fundamental to developing a broader understanding in subjects like biology. The rest of the session will be spent on going over the concepts that we have decided to touch on. This will be mix of explanations punctuated by practice questions and visual aids. If the student expresses that they are visual learners, then I am also more than happy to prepare powerpoint animations or diagrams before the session.
I am 100% committed to the success of whoever I teach. I believe that this level of commitment is only possible if I take on a single student. I do not plan to make a career out of being a tutor, if I can help nurture someone's interests in maths and/or biology and develop my own skills as a teacher at the same time, then I will have fulfilled my goal. I am happy to be a resource that the student draws upon for guidance and tips with regards to how to navigate their early academic careers.
