I am an Insurance Pricing Analyst with a Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Pure Mathematics from King's College London and a Masters (M.A.) in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge. I have always been passionate about Mathematics Education and, before changing careers, I was a University Lecturer in Mathematics.
When I'm not writing code or working on maths puzzles (for fun!), I enjoy playing the piano and watching films at my lovely local cinema.
As a university lecturer, I taught a broad range of modules, ranging from foundational courses (Calculus, Algebra, Probability & Statistics etc.) to more advanced mathematics (Algebraic Number Theory, Commutative Algebra, Algebraic Geometry etc.).
Whilst at KCL, I was twice the winner (and twice the runner-up) of the department's Outstanding Teaching award. This prize is awarded annually in response to nominations from the student body based on criteria such as "engagement with students" and "making learning enjoyable" and is further supported by feedback and observations from academic staff.
In terms of outreach, I have also worked as a tutor for the "King's Factor", an after-school club designed to provide mathematical enrichment for A-level students based at state-schools throughout London. In addition to this, I have taught several stand-alone classes aimed at introducing high school students to some interesting and elementary areas of mathematics that are not usually explored in the standard GCSE or A-level syllabus.
Finally, I have worked as a private tutor for GCSE, A-level and degree-level students and have also helped state-school students prepare for Oxbridge entrance (MAT for Oxford/STEP for Cambridge).
The student's needs and learning style are my primary guide but, in general, maths is best understood by exploring lots of down-to-earth examples and, by working together with the student, we can find those examples that are the most helpful and illuminating.
Although it is sometimes said that people divide into those who can do maths and those who cannot, I completely disagree. I believe that everyone can have a meaningful and empowering experience with maths and that the way in which we're taught is fundamental in ensuring this.
