Robert

I was made a Chartered Mathematician and a Fellow Of The Institute Of Mathematics & Its Applications in 1998.
I have worked at the University Of Cambridge in the Cambridge Assessment department which comprises OCR, Cambridge International Education (CIE) and Cambridge Assessment English.
I have worked in multiple fields applying Maths (I can confirm it is used in real life!). Knowing how Maths works in the outside world helps me teach its concepts in practical terms.

Tutoring Experience

I started tutoring Mathematics after I graduated and I was so thrilled how well my students did - it was down to their hard work of course, my job was to point them in the right direction.
I have progressed in Mathematics following my BSc in Maths & Stats and reached the level of Chartered Mathematician and Fellow Of The Institute Of Mathematics & Its Applications. I have mentored and coached in my Mathematical based roles throughout my career.

Tutoring Approach

My lessons will be fun.
I am Enhanced DBS checked.
Specialising in helping ages 9 - 16 who need help in Maths (GCSE, 11+, SATS, KS2, KS3).
I use lots of examples and relate them to everyday things to help the understanding of the topic.
We all know Mathematics is a very important subject - for everyday life, but also as a means to get into higher education or for many jobs. My philosophy is - to be "good" at Maths, the best way is to actually understand it rather than follow a set of instructions to solve a problem.
If you are naturally "good" at Maths, those steps will be obvious and there is no issue. For most people (myself included!), the key is to "understand" the steps in solving a Maths problem - this will help you understand Maths itself.
For example, I was taught for years that π (Pi) was 3.14159... and to solve the circumference of a circle, you use the equation 2πRadius. That is just an instruction – there is no understanding there to be had.
However, just by looking at a diagram of a circle, we notice the 2 * Radius part of the equation is really just the Diameter. Now, we know that the equation is Circumference = π * Diameter. Therefore, π is really just the ratio for circles between a diameter and its circumference. This is true for any circle - the Circumference is always Pi or π (i.e. 3.14) times the Diameter. That is just an example of hopefully understanding a concept a bit better – and a lot easier if I could have included diagrams here!
I will make your lessons fun and will help you develop in Maths.
