It was at school in Liverpool where I first developed my love of Classical Languages. After A levels in Greek, Latin and Ancient History I went to Pembroke College, Oxford to read Classics. My interest in things Greek continued and after several visits to Greece I learned Modern Greek and even married a Greek woman!
I am now retired from teaching mainly English in Secondary Schools and am delighted to have reconnected with my Classical Languages. I continue my enthusiasm for them by attending advanced reading courses in London.
I am also a member of the Classical Association, the Association for the Reform of Latin Teaching and the National Education Union.
I have an Enhanced DBS Certificate.
I have taught in mixed comprehensive schools in Greater London for the majority of my teaching career. I have at different times been Head of Classics and Responsible for GCSE English. I have also been appointed to examine by two Examination boards in the past 5 years.
I have been tutoring for 8 years. I have taught Latin very successfully to GCSE, whether for EDUQAS or OCR, with all my students achieving A*. Although students have been of a wider ability range in English, I have managed to master the changes in exam syllabuses over a range of boards and am delighted to see that a number of my students achieved 9s in the 2018 entry.
I am very pleased that both in Latin and English my students have chosen to study the subjects at A-Level and University.
Additionally I have prepared students for scholarship exams to Eton and Winchester, specifically in Classics, English and General Papers.
Effective tutoring is a joint enterprise. It is very rare for success not to come if we are both working together for it. So my first priority is to create a sense of community. I take an interest in my students and find that having a sense of humour often works.
But an eye for detail is also necessary. So I familiarise myself with what Exam boards want and try to analyse what the student needs to achieve that. I value the support of other Classics teachers and their support networks to keep me up to date.
I would expect students to devote at least as much time out of lessons to their tuition and regularly set homework to ensure that happens.
