Experienced tutor with over fifteen years experience, specialising in maths tuition for all ages and abilities. I am passionate about mathematics education and I also make worksheets, activities and games for maths teachers and tutors.
I have experience in making mathematics engaging, interesting, fun and most importantly accessible to everyone. I tutor from primary through to secondary and I have tutored students in preparation for the SATS, 11+, 13+ and GCSE.
I have many years experience working in a primary and secondary school setting, including being a school governor, and I have been a tutor since 2007
I have a lot of experience in tutoring the 11+ and 13+ up to scholarship level, as well as GCSE both foundation and higher levels.
I am also experienced in tutoring students with additional and special needs. I have taught a number of autistics students, and I am experienced in working with dyslexic and dyspraxic students. I am also aware of dyscalulia, and I have developed a number of techniques that have helped them develop their mathematical abilities.
I tutor online using Zoom, and I am able to travel to a client, however, I do use a wheelchair, so would only be able to tutor downstairs if I am to tutor in person.
The tutoring experience should be fun, inspiring and develop a love for learning. The tutees needs are crucial, and I create an environment in which they feel safe. I have experience supporting nervous students. Most students get a tutor because they are struggling. Building confidence is always my first goal.
Patience is key, and one of the things I love most about tutoring is finding different ways to explain things so that the student understands the concept. It isn't enough just to teach a set of instructions that students follow. The exams today test for true understanding of topics, so I form a solid foundation on which to build a true understanding.
The benefit about tutoring is that we can go at the student's pace. This means we have the flexibility to spend more time on a topic they may be struggling with. I use many techniques to help understanding, based on the student's needs, including aids in learning, visualisation and activities. I look for key misconceptions and address these. I use my own resources in my tutoring sessions and often develop new resources to fit my student's needs.
For primary students, I am also able to tutor English in addition to maths if required, especially in preparation for the SATS.
