Medical Student at Newcastle University where I have completed 4 of 5 years. Pursuing a Master's by Research (MRes) in Neurosurgery at the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology in London. Interests include vascular neurosurgery and innovative techniques to improve medical education.
I have developed a broad range of skills over four years at Medical School, enabling me to adapt my approach to my students. In my pre-clinical years I volunteered to teach Basic Life Support (BLS) in the community for two consecutive years. I have experience in delivering didactic lectures, as I have taught pre-clinical medical students sub-topics within the field of neurology including stroke and spinal cord lesions.
Building on my experience, I organised a regional teaching series in my fourth year, aimed at medical students in the North East, covering neuroanatomy and management of common neurosurgical conditions. The use of virtual three-dimensional manipulable models enhanced my students’ understanding of neuroanatomy. Through building connections within the field of neurosurgery I have had first-hand experience in facilitating trauma simulations and teaching radiological interpretation as part of a neurosurgical skills event at my institution.
While pursuing a career in neurosurgery, I have also mentored 3 individuals that were interested in medicine, all of which have secured offers for medical school at highly-regarded institutions.
I intend to combine both my knowledge of the medical school admissions process with the skills I have developed to adopt a tailored approach to support Sixth Form/College students that are interested in a career in Medicine. I am keen to help students with critical steps of the application including the personal statement, selecting which University best aligns with an individual’s strengths and the interview. I have had some experience supporting students and I myself was invited to four interviews and have experienced a range of question styles, all within the umbrella of MMIs (Multiple Mini Interviews). I was successful in receiving 3 offers in my application cycle.
