Phil

Hi, I'm Phil, a full time school teacher and part time private tutor. I have been with First Tutors for two years, but have tutoring experience for many years face to face, and thanks to the pandemic, extensive experience in working with students remotely. I am in North Devon* for in-person tutoring, but happy to tutor remotely to students anywhere.

*My school does not allow us to privately tutor students from our own classes in school. Before I agree to tutor, I will have to check if this is the case or not.

Tutoring Experience

I have been teaching GCSE Science to all levels of ability for 28 years. I am Head of Physics / Deputy Head of Science in a large comprehensive.

I am also a senior examiner for a major exam board, and have marked for GCSE exams for 8 years. I currently lead teams of examiners for combined science and physics and I am involved with post results review of marking.

I have designed and delivered exam preparation courses as a consultant to other local schools.

Tutoring Approach

My students tell me I am caring and patient, but still have high expectations. I will be punctual, well prepared and will make the best use of the time I am employed for.

My thorough knowledge of the examination specification and exam mark schemes gives excellent preparation for exams, and my long experience with all abilities ensures that I know how to get the best out of students.

Tutoring can take the form of intensive exam preparation in year 11, regular support for topics studied in school or even enhancement above and extra to the curriculum.

For online tutoring, I will operate a personalised Virtual Classroom where I will share and upload resources. The virtual classroom will include a two way video and audio link for live remote teaching, and I will include practical and virtual experiments (using a range of software simulations) where possible. Outside of scheduled lesson times, messages can be left by me or the student on the virtual classroom page.

Parents can expect regular updates (by email or video link for remote teaching), and I plan lessons in advance based on requirements from parents and students.

For each tutored session you will be getting a well planned, crafted lesson involving testing of prior knowledge, teaching or revising of concepts tailored to the student including tips for exam success, and live assessment and feedback.

All resources are included, which will include past paper packs and mark schemes closer to exam time.
