Patrick

Hello, my name is Patrick, I'm 66 years old. I am a father of two. I enjoy teaching and learning and helping others, particularly those at both ends of the ability spectrum.
I have an enhanced DBS, and can provide references on request in addition to those available here.

Tutoring Experience

I've had several varied careers since finishing at Uni including Laboratory Engineer, Product Design & Install, Accountancy, and IT Developer and Trainer (for the past 25 years). So, I have broad life experience which I draw on in motivating students, with my experience as a Trainer being particularly relevant to being a Tutor.
More recently, since the start of 2020, I've been tutoring for 15 hours/week. At Primary level this is in any subject, at Secondary it is mostly Maths & Physics GCSEs, and Physics at A Level.

Tutoring Approach

I'm particularly good at motivating GCSE Maths students who have potential but struggling to realise it. Both those for whom Maths is their weak subject and those who live and breathe it. Two challenges that I aim to overcome:
"How to get a student to avoid making simple errors" and
"Maths may not be your best subject but let's make sure it's not a problem for you!"
Having studied Physics at Uni, and got A* Physics at A level, I am also very capable of supporting Physics students through to A Level.
But I'm also very able with Primary age students, in English or Maths. Without pretending to be one, I find I can connect with them. I'll simply quote one 8-year old boy who asked his mother whether - as a treat - he could spend some time just talking with me. Invariably, that connection means they arrive at the lesson WANTING to learn, and that attitude impacts their learning very positively.
