Nick

Maths and Computer Studies / I.T. Teacher in Exeter

Hi, I'm Nick! I'm a private tutor focusing at GCSE level, helping students to prepare and achieve their best at GCSEs.

I have degrees in both Marine Engineering and Computer Science, and I’ve completed several years of a PhD in Computer Science. I also have level 1 and 2 qualifications in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, so I understand the importance of a supportive and effective learning environment.

Tutoring Experience

I have several years of experience as a teaching assistant at university, where I assisted in delivering lectures, running tutorials, and providing one-on-one support to students. This role also involved marking exams and coursework, giving me insight into the challenges students face during assessments and how to best prepare them for success from both sides of the process.

Having tutored at GCSE level in the past, I've since returned to this level as it's where many students start to find their passions and I enjoy helping students to further this or alternatively to find an interest in subjects they perhaps aren't so keen on. I find that my deep understanding of the material allows me to explain it in different ways and with different approaches where needed.

Tutoring Approach

Having experienced the benefits of good support myself, I'm keen to offer this to my students. I offer a gentle and supportive environment to help build confidence and encourage students to experiment and trust their instincts. I aim to keep sessions active and engaging, paying close attention during sessions to ensure that we shift focus or slow down when needed.

I am student-centred and aim to help find unique problem solving strategies that work for each individual. No two brains are the same and neither are any two students. I help students to understand the topics in a way that makes sense to them, and to use their skills to the best of their abilities.
