Hi! I'm Mike and I'm a Classics graduate from Oxford University. I've been teaching and tutoring for the last 21 years and am currently the Head of Department at one of the most successful Classics departments in the country. I have examined GCSE language papers in both Latin and Greek for 9 years with OCR and I also have extensive experience of UCAS, Oxbridge and US applications. Here are my results over the last three years:
A2 Latin - 13 students (9A*, 4A)
A2 Greek - 5 students (4A*, 1A)
GCSE Latin - 25 students (22 nine grades, 3 eight grades)
GCSE Greek - 25 students (19 nine grades, 6 eight grades)
Other select highlights:
In the summer of 2017, the final year of the old GCSE specifications and grading system, I had 22 pupils in one fast-track Gratin class. All 22 students achieved A* grades in both Latin and Greek, despite having only half the recommended teaching time. 44 entries - 44 A* grades!
In the last five years, seven of my students have received offers to read Classics at Oxbridge colleges, one received an offer from Princeton University, and several other former pupils have received First Class degrees in Classics from Durham, Warwick and UCL.
At my previous non-selective day school, I managed to introduce Classical Civilisation and Greek courses alongside Latin that was already being taught there. The subsequent numbers opting for the subjects and the results achieved led to the school making it into the top 20 of the Good Schools Guide 'Six of the Best' feature for Classics, ahead of schools such as St Paul's, Tonbridge and RGS Guildford.
I have taught Latin, Greek and Classical Civilisation to all ages from 11-18 for the past 21 years. I have been a head of Classics for 17 years, director of Oxbridge applications for 4 years and UCAS deputy for 10 years (recently specialising in Overseas University Applications). I was a GCSE examiner for OCR Latin and Greek for 9 years.
My goal is to make Classics as accessible and enjoyable to as many students as possible, whilst maintaining the highest academic standards. I am passionate about my subject and believe that through a mixture of good humour, enthusiasm and meticulous preparation I get the best possible results from my students.
