Hi, my name is Michael Rothman. I'm a multi-instrumentalist, music producer and Alexander Technique teacher from Brazil with more than 20 years of musical practice and more than 10 years of music teaching experience in several different settings. I play drum kit, transversal flute, percussion, as well as some piano, guitar, bass, and beatbox. I came to England to study to become a teacher of the Alexander Technique, which gives me a different perspective on musical education with a great understanding of instrument technique and how to learn any instrument without strain or effort. Focusing on our thinking process and emotional expression, Iʼm always looking for enjoyment and purpose in my students practice. Having studied with big names of Brazilian Jazz in Rio de Janeiro to deeply understand instrumental music, having played with award winning groups in Brazil, playing over Europe and Brazil as a session musician, from recording, mixing and composing my own album, I have a wide range of knowledge to pass forward. Iʼm extremely happy to be able to influence peopleʼs lives with my knowledge of music and passion for musical practice.
I've been performing and teaching music in several different settings. Performing in musical theatre, touring with artists, playing in brass bands, contemporary dance classes, jazz trio and award winning Brazilian groups. I did gigs for more than 160,000 people in Rio's carnival, and played for Prince Harry and president Dilma Roussef in Brazil. I also have been teaching privately since 2010, done percussion workshops and worked in primary schools in the UK. I also worked teaching the Alexander Technique as a teaching assistant in the Alexander Technique Studio training course, and with private students.
All lessons that I provide are specifically suited for the level of the student,
thinking of goals that encourage and stimulate, with sensitivity and awareness of the students needs. Always encouraging them to play the songs and tunes that they know and enjoy, and creating a lesson in which they can appropriate themselves of what they are doing, developing their imagination and curiosity.
In my lessons you will learn:
- Coordination and independence exercises
- How to read music
- A big range of music styles from Pop to Jazz, Latin to Reggae
- How to play the songs you love
- How to think and analyse arrangements
- How to create and improvise your own music
I would love to hear from you, and discuss what and how you want to learn.
