Hello I'm Michael, a maths tutor and former maths school teacher. I have a masters degree in maths from the University of Nottingham and I tutor all secondary level mathematics up to and including A Level Further maths. I've had a passion for maths since as long as I can remember and I like to install a similar passion in all my students. I put a lot of effort into helping my students progress and so set very high expectations for all my pupils.
Currently I am only tutoring online using Bitpaper. Please contact me if you need more details about how online tutoring works. I tutor on Saturdays and some weekday evenings.
I have taught and tutored across the Edexcel, AQA and OCR exam boards and I make sure I am always fully up to date with changes to specifications and exams.
I worked as a full-time maths teacher in the UK and Asia for 2 years and then worked as a teacher in the UK for a year after that. I've been tutoring for over 10 years and have also been helping students online with maths for longer than that. Currently I work full-time as a software developer but I continue to tutor a handful of students. Since I don't have many students and I'm not working as a teacher anymore, tutoring has become a kind of hobby for me and I can dedicate a lot of time to the few students that I have.
My initial plan with a student is to identify the student's strengths and weaknesses in as much detail as I can. Once I have this foundation, I don't have a fixed plan with a tutee since all pupils progress differently; if I need to change my methods I will. I like to build confidence with praise but still set high expectations. I like to ask a lot of questions to allow the student to build up good understanding themselves as I guide them along the way - a lack of proper understanding is one of the main reasons why students often struggle with maths, particularly at A Level.
Outside of tutoring sessions, I am always available to answer maths questions by email. When I take on a student I make sure they're aware that I'm always available to help them with maths, not just the one hour a week when I see them.
