English and Psychology Tuition in Chertsey

I offer tuition in GCSE and A Level English Language and Literature, A Level Sociology and Psychology. I am a HE lecturer with more than twenty years teaching and tutoring experience. My qualifications include a BA/MA degree from University of Oxford, a PhD from Royal Holloway University of London and a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education. I have been working as a private tutor since 2019.

Tutoring Experience

My experience includes lectures, teaching smaller groups and one-to-one supervision/tuition. I have also supported students with different strengths and a range of abilities and needs throughout my career. In terms of subjects, my tutoring/teaching experience includes English (GCSE and A Level, particularly the AQA Board), psychology, sociology and philosophy. Specialist areas within psychology include mental illness, psychotherapy and qualitative research methods including analysing text and narratives which is also an important aspect of English language and literature. As well as teaching, my passion for English language and literature comes from my work in professional theatre and film production where we have produced ancient Greek tragedy and comedy, classics and new writing.

Tutoring Approach

I am a calm, friendly and supportive tutor, and will work with students to develop ability in their chosen subject, build confidence and foster independent learning, whilst at the same time accommodating different learning requirements. I can adapt to accommodate individual learning needs. This may include facilitating motivation, organisation and planning, promoting independent learning and study techniques, as well as working with students on texts, topics and exam questions.
The focus of the first session will be on finding out about the student and their needs by considering academic strengths, challenges, achievements and goals, reviewing current progress including grade achievements and technique, exploring study skills and methods, and discussing and agreeing on a working but flexible plan for future sessions.
