Outside school hours I currently only have availability on Thursday at 4pm
I am a civil engineer turned maths tutor after completing teacher training (PGCE, QTS). I believe everyone can learn maths. I love one-to-one tutoring as it allows me to focus on an individual student's needs and potential.
I used to work in hydraulic engineering and flood defence and this helps me show how maths is used in many different ways in practice.
I am a mother of four boys and have been involved in maths education from primary school to university. All four are now at university after doing Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry at Alevel. They are studying Maths, Physics, Electrical Engineering and Astronomy. I am familiar with SATS, Common Entrance and Common Academic Scholarships exams both at 11+ and 13+. I am familiar with GCSE and IGCSE at for all exam boards and also GCSE Further Maths, GCSE Statistics and OCR Additional Maths. I have worked with GCSE resitters and helped a student achieve her Functional Skills at college.
During my PGCE (teacher training) I have worked in two secondary schools in Horsham and Crawley teaching whole classes (years 7 to 10, low, middle and high ability), assisting small groups and individuals and helping 6th formers doing GCSE resits. In preparation for my PGCE I also assisted in a school in Horsham and in two schools in Hastings.
I am friendly, calm and patient and a good listener. I will start by discussing individual progress and goals and quickly assess a student's current level. I believe it is important to understand why a method works and how it is linked to other areas of math so I focus on mastery of basics before building on that for more complex problems. I will try to explain in different ways and find what works for a student. I think the best way to learn maths is by doing maths. To make practice fun and interesting, I include puzzles, matching activities and games. I believe this approach will help students studying for the new GCSE Maths which has more emphasis on problem-solving and mathematical reasoning.
