Hi! I'm Madeline, a postgraduate student and French-English translator originally from Maine, USA. I love creative writing and playing Dungeons and Dragons with my friends, and in my free time you can find me hiking or singing with my choir.
Qualifications-wise, I recently earned an MA with Distinction in Translation from Queen's University Belfast, where I'll be working towards a PhD beginning in October 2025. Prior to that, I earned an Honours BA in Linguistics from Princeton University, and I scored a 5 out of 5 on my AP English Language and AP English Literature exams (the closest USA equivalent to A-Levels).
I have two years' experience working with Matriculate, a non-profit organisation in the USA which supports under-served teenagers during their university application process. As an advisor there, I tutored students in study skills, research skills, essay-writing, and exam preparation. I also have six months' (one semester's) experience as an economics tutor at the undergraduate level.
I believe in a highly individual, relational approach to tutoring, where conversations with the student about their learning style allow me to adapt my teaching to their needs. This can look like asking a student who struggles with writing to walk me verbally through their ideas; drawing diagrams for students who need visual aids; and incorporating plenty of 'practice runs' for students who learn best by doing. Above all, I centre my approach around the maxim that tutoring is a collaborative process, and that every student has the ability to succeed if given the proper tools.
