I am an experienced tutor with a wide range of academic interests, in particular the study of the Universe (cosmology). I completed a BSc in Physics at Edinburgh University and a Masters in Astrophysics (distinction) at UCL. I was later invited to return to UCL to study a group in the Cosmology Department working on a high profile astronomy project called the Dark Energy Survey. In 2017/2018 I almost completed a PGCE in Physics with Science at the University of the West of England, Bristol, but this came to an abrupt end after a cycling accident. After I recovered I decided to work solely as a private tutor.
From 2013 to 2020 I was involved in researching, writing and editing a book on the Dark Energy Survey. This was published in September 2020 by World Scientific.
I've been tutoring privately for ten years and have worked as a science teacher in schools: Gordano School in Portishead (rated Ofsted outstanding) and John of Gaunt School in Trowbridge. I also worked for a year in a Somali after-school learning centre. I have a good track record in helping people to prepare for GCSEs, iGCSES, Nationals and A-levels and am well acquainted with all of the information in the AQA, Edexcel and OCR curricula. I know what tutees need to learn in order to do well in their exams.
I'm constantly on the lookout for new and engaging ways to teach maths and science and I'm up to date with current research in neuroscience on how the brain processes information. I teach my tutees the SIMPLEST, MOST EFFECTIVE and MOST EFFICIENT techniques for learning. They can then transfer these techniques to any area of study.
I tailor each lesson to the individual, boosting confidence by working through the material slowly and carefully in a relaxed and encouraging way. I can help students to understand their schoolwork, motivate personal study at all ages and guide preparation for exams. I also prepare the ground for A-levels for those wishing to continue with these subjects. Without preparation, many people find the transition to A-levels very challenging. I can also prepare those taking A-level physics to go on to physics or engineering at University.
I aim to inspire real interest in maths, physics and chemistry by providing a wider background to the knowledge than is taught at school and by helping people understand why science is amazing. I can help those who feel hopeless in a subject to shine.
