I am a qualified secondary mathematics teacher. I trained in Nottingham in 2013, taught in London for 3 years, moved to Tokyo and taught maths there for 3 years before going to San Francisco for 2 years, where I taught maths there too, and over the pandemic too!
Upon moving back to the UK, I decided to move away from teaching and am currently working as a Residential Support Worker in a children's home. Doing private tutoring again made me realise how much I missed teaching and I am now back at working at a secondary school!
I like to read (mainly fantasy, but also willing to accept any recommendations!), cook (and eat!), snowboard and do yoga.
I am a fully qualified mathematics teacher, holding a BSc in Mathematics and a PGCE with QTS in
Secondary Mathematics. I have 8 years experience as a classroom teacher (3 years in England, 3 in Tokyo, 2 in San Francisco) and have over 7 years’ worth of experience in private tutoring for the ages of KS1 through to KS4 and successfully helped a lady pass a numeracy test to get onto a midwifery course.
I have experience in teaching various exam boards: AQA and Edexcel specifications up to and including KS4 and the Edexcel and OCR MEI Specifications at AS-Level. I also have experience in teaching the IB MYP and DP SL (both AA and AI)
I am also an online examiner for Edexcel ( the IGCSE Higher Paper 2 and 3 and the GCSE Pure Further Maths Paper)
My philosophy to teaching is to not focus on the grades. As tutor and student, we will work together to understand where the strengths and weaknesses are. This will be through both written and verbal work; communication is the foundation of improvement and by being able to communicate how you understand something only then can we figure out how to overcome the hurdles being faced.
My strategy includes facing misconceptions and not shying away from making mistakes. I always say that to make mistakes is fine and we just need to work on understanding where they come from so that we can avoid making them in the future.
I tend to allow the student to guide the way in terms of what they want to learn; if they find they are struggling with the topics that week in school we can do those, but I will also use things like test papers to help diagnose topics that may be needed to be revisited.
I do not currently offer online tuition.
The prices on my profile are hour based for a single student: I have different prices for 1.5 and 2 hour lessons, as well as different prices if you wanted to do groups of 2 - 5 students. The distance from me may affect the prices, to take into account travel time.
