A dedicated and experienced educator with a passion for mathematics. With 4 years of classroom teaching experience in diverse settings, I am confident in my ability to support students of all abilities. While I have transitioned to a career in professional services, I remain committed to sharing my knowledge and expertise with aspiring learners.
My fluency in French and Spanish allows me to effectively communicate with students and parents from various backgrounds, fostering a welcoming and inclusive learning environment.
Trainee and Newly Qualified Teacher of Mathematics, Comprehensive School in Coventry, West Midlands (2019-2021):
* Taught mathematics to students of varying abilities in a challenging special measures school.
* Classroom "bubbles" during the COVID-19 pandemic required me to pitch lessons at mixed attainment groups, requiring careful classroom management and intelligent use of resources to challenge students of all abilities
* Gave 1-to-1 tuition to a gifted and talented student who was sitting GCSEs early.
* Ran GCSE intervention classes to target pupils at-risk of not achieving grade 4/5. These sessions were designed to target "easy marks": typical questions which can be mastered with minimal additional teaching.
Mathematics Teacher- International British Curriculum School, United Arab Emirates (2019-2021)
* Ran an extra-curricular quantitative economics society to expose high achieving sixth form students to the mathematical rigour of Economics at top ranked global universities.
* Interacted with students from varied backgrounds and prior learning experiences
* Collated a rich bank of learning resources to challenge students of all abilities
Although I may be willing to offer lessons virtually, my experience has shown me that learners are far more engaged and focused when physically supervised. Additionally, this gives me a far better grasp of the student's understanding.
Additionally, my teaching philosophy is grounded in the following principles:
* Fluency Practice: You can't run before you can walk. Mathematical problem solving is what truly inspires love for the subject, however this can only be attained when a student has procedural fluency and has working memory capacity to tackle the difficult nature of problems.
* Problem-Solving Skills: When students are ready, I strongly encourage deep thinking about difficult probems, which at first are tackled with supervision, which is gradually released until students become independent problem solvers. As well as encouraging deep learning, problem solving increases student's feelings of self efficacy and joy of learning.
* Evidence-Informed Pedagogy: Throughout my teaching career, I passionately stayed up-to-date with the latest research in education and incorporate evidence informed practice into my teaching.
* Fun!: Although this may sound like mission impossible for some maths students, emotional association with the subject is a critical factor in student's success. As such, I try to make learning interactions as fun and exciting as possible so students feel like maths is a hobby rather than a chore.
