I graduated from the University of Edinburgh with an undergraduate degree in Biology, with a specialism in Zoology. I have always been fascinated by the natural world, and pursued these interests throughout my time in higher education. After being introduced to the world of infectious disease in my final year, I decided to complete a Masters in Parasitology, gaining a greater understanding of the myriad ways in which parasitic organisms shape our world. Throughout my time at university, I always loved learning from and teaching others about the knowledge that I have gained, and after realising the the world of academia would never fully satisfy this passion, I decided to become a secondary school teacher.
As a Science teacher for the past 3 years, I have planned lessons and units across key stages with a range of modalities. I have experience teaching across a wide range of attainment levels, and have a proven track record of delivering exam results that are above predicted. I have taught KS3-KS5, including the IB and BTEC Applied Science, and have also worked as the Extended Essay and Reflective Project Coordinator for the IB
I focus on using a student-centred approach, where I act as a facilitator instead of an instructor. Facilitating the learning process results in a far more profound educational experience, and builds a sense of autonomy and independence that stays with students throughout their lives. The central idea at the heart of the student-centred approach is that learning experiences are more powerful when the student finds the answer themselves, under the guidance of a knowledgeably mentor. My ultimate goal is to no longer be needed by my students.
