I am a graduate of the University of Oxford with a BA in Geography and a MSc in Social Anthropology. Following university I worked for the London office of the Japan Bank for International Development, a department of the Japanese government responsible for export finance and development aid. Unfortunately ill health forced me to leave that career and I have been offering private tuition as my health has recovered.
I have been tutoring full time for 10 years, and have experience teaching AQA, Edexcel, OCR and CIE A-level Geography as well as AQA GCSE Geography. I have found that I can easily establish a rapport with my students and parents have frequently reported satisfaction with my work.
In addition to this I have also helped students prepare to attend university. During my time at Oxford I helped look after candidates during their interview process and have successfully mentored a student applying to Cambridge University. I have also recently mentored a trainee geography teacher.
Finally, whilst not teaching experience, my work for the Japan Bank for International Development gave me an insight into the career of a professional geographer and I feel helps me give a rounded education to my students.
I tailor my lessons for each individual student. However, in general I look to explain the subject matter and illustrate it with case studies during the lesson. I also believe in a cooperative approach to teaching, with me asking questions during the lesson about the topic. The reason for this is that it helps us explore the topic and see how it relates to other parts of the course, a key skill for high grades at A-level.
I provide written notes for each lesson. The reason for this is that it frees up the student to interact with me during the lesson, rather than simply sitting and writing notes, while also ensuring they have good notes to revise from.
Finally I am a big believer in the importance of exam technique, which can be a key factor in holding back otherwise excellent students. I look to periodically set practice questions. I will give some coaching in exam technique in advance and then give thorough feedback after marking them. I also find such practice questions help me monitor student progress.
