Private Maths Tuition in Darlington

I love Mathematics and I am passionate about tutoring mathematics. I have performed very well in Mathematics at every stage GCSE, A Level, University and at work. I am 59 years old, and I am married with 2 grown up children both completed degrees in mathematics employed as capital actuary and pension consultant.

I am a proud Darlington resident and I have lived in Darlington since 1992. I have helped over 190 students from the First tutors since 2010. Please feel free to read 130+ feedback from the parents of my students to get a sense of the quality of my tutoring service.
Since Covid-19, I have enhanced my online teaching experience and majority of my students are now online benefiting from my one-to-one tutoring service tailored to meet student’s individual requirements.

Tutoring Experience

I have taught Mathematics and Further Mathematics at A Level (AS/A2) for many years and I have been trained to teach new AS and A levels from Sept 2017 for Edexcel, OCR, OCR MEI, AQA and Cambridge International exam boards as well as GCSE 9-1 syllabus from 2015 (Edexcel / OCR / AQA). I also teach Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics, Further Mathematics, AQA Level2 Further Mathematics and OCR Additional Maths.
I am proud that many of my students achieved A*, A Grades in A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics hence secured first choice University places. I have experience in teaching Mathematics and Further Mathematics for Edexcel, OCR, OCR (MEI), AQA, Cambridge International and WJEC exam boards. I have exam board focused resources that I share with my students to practice and excel in Mathematics.
Many students come to me with different level of ability in Mathematics and I am pleased to report that I did help them to achieve the grades required to secure a place at a university of their firm choice for the degrees that they want to read. I am proud that my past students went to the following Universities: Cambridge University, Oxford University, Imperial College, London School of Economics, Warwick University, Bristol University, University College of London, King's College London, Queen MaryBirmingham University, Manchester University, Durham University, City University, Southampton University, Newcastle University, Nottingham University, Leeds University, Leicester University, York University, Hull University, Loughborough University, Lancaster University, Surrey University, Cardiff University, and Sheffield University.
Because of my work experience in the real world, I generally relate Mathematics application to real world experiences that makes student to understand the concept, and this makes their learning experience easier. Majority of my GCSE / IGCSE students got 9 in Mathematics and proceed to do Mathematics and Further Mathematics in A Level.
I do cover the following exam boards for AS Level, A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics and GCSE / IGCSE Mathematics.

Tutoring Approach

I first assess the student on his/her ability on Maths and discuss what he/she wants to achieve and set some achievable goals and follow a structure to improve Maths skills and perform well not only in the classroom but also in the examinations. I do not have a magic wand to perform miracles. I work with the student to improve their grades by explaining the concept/ theory in a clear logical manner and motivate and encourage the student to perform well in maths. I develop students’ confidence so that they can tackle maths problem and encourage them to reflect. I help them with strategies and approaches to solve maths. I teach a topic and test the student to ensure understanding of the topic before moving onto the next topic. for certain topics, I use diagram and tables to improve understanding. I encourage and motivate students by providing plenty of exam board specific resources. My students aiming for A* / A grades in A levels and 8 / 9 in GCSE's are expected to do some homework between lessons. There is no substitute for practicing maths questions and solving maths problems. There were occasions where students came with a specific request to perform well in the exam; I have helped them to improve their grades at the exam through rigorous revision techniques going through past exam questions.
I guide my students to understand mathematics and mathematical processes in a way that promotes confidence, fosters enjoyment, and provides a strong foundation for progress to further studies.
I help my students to develop the mathematical knowledge and skill to solve challenging problems, while bringing an understanding of the coherence and progression in mathematics, exploring how areas are interconnected.
I will make my students feel comfortable manipulating complicated algebraic expressions, have a reasonable spatial awareness, and help them to present their thoughts in a clear and structured way.
